On November 28, 2009, James Kraig Kahler, a former Columbia, Missouri city official, shot and killed his wife, her grandmother, and the couples’ two daughters in Burlingame, Kansas. At trial, Kahler’s defense counsel presented testimony that Kahler was severely depressed, “‘mentally overwhelmed’”, and “not able to control his behavior” at the time of the shooting.
